Roseann Bennett is the Co-Founder and Director of the Center for Assessment and Treatment in Hackettstown, New Jersey. Ms. Bennett is a licensed marriage and family therapist who holds advanced degrees from Seton Hall University. Recently, Roseann Bennett discussed some common misunderstandings that the general public holds regarding mental health issues.

According to Ms. Bennett, many people view mental health as an either or proposition. They feel that you are either mentally ill, or your mental health is intact. As Ms. Bennett points out, mental health actually falls along a spectrum. One’s mental health can fluctuate as does one’s physical health.

Mental Health Issues are over-associated with violence. Ms. Bennett believes that this misconception is due to the fact that many who act violently and are mentally ill receive a large amount of coverage in the media. Most of those who are suffering from mental health issues are not violent in any way.

Another piece of misinformation that Roseann Bennett has identified is that many people do not believe that children can suffer from mental health issues. This is certainly not true. Many children suffer from anxiety disorders, depression and a host of other mental health problems. Ms. Bennett points out that many common mental health disorders manifest before the age of 14, and the vast majority of mental health issues begin before a person reaches the age of 24.

The final misconception that Roseann Bennett has identified is that many believe that they will never suffer from a mental health disorder. Unfortunately, no one is immune from mental health issues. It is important for a person to consult with a mental health professional if that person feels that he or she is suffering from depression, anxiety or another mental health problem.
